About Stany

Who are you?

My name is Stanislav N. Vardomskiy. My interests are rather eclectic, but after dropping out of high school and whoring in high tech sector for 6 years as Unix sysadmin, Cisco network admin in charge of BGP peerings, director of Internet Exchange, and general purpose consultant for hire, I am now back in academentia. At one point I used to be Sun Certified Security Administrator, but certification lapsed, and I’ve not bothered to renew it.

What are your interests?

Back about a decade, I used to consider myself a bastion of sanity on the path of the great unwashed, while dealing with computers professionally. Since then I’ve recovered, and stopped reading A.S.R years ago. It used to be funny, but constant re-hashing of the same points eventuallly got boring and I moved on. Same with #unix on efnet.

Officially I pursue a degree in BA Biology at Carleton University. For the last two years, however, I’ve been more commonly observed in the math department building. While I am not planning to drastically change my major, and become pure mathematican, I am interested in applied algebra: designs, coding theory, and occasional direct applications of it, such as Reed-Solomon, Hamming, BCH codes or Polya counting. One of these days I’ll do an article on these, as in my mind they are real practical applications of mathematics that are both used and appreciated by people daily, without realizing it.

Eventually I am hoping to do my disseration on inhibition of reproductive cycles of parasytes in humans, however this is still a long time away, and in order to do that I might need to do a foray into biochemistry.

For a while I’ve menstruated, but costs got prohibitive. Yes, it is possible to love and fear something at the same time. And yes they are beautiful.

While neither Northern and Southern Shaolin Street Ninjitsu nor rythmic movement of martial arts as a form of worship to evil Zen god are my interests (but should be a good google whack), occasionally I get asked if I am interested to join the Evil Team. Incentive is a lightsaber with “Bad Motherfucka” engraving. However part of entry requirements is shaving off my hair, so so far I’ve resisted.

Why here?

Adam mentioned that I should have my own blog. His rationale was that recruiters now a days do Google searches on the names of the folks, and having “google juice” is good idea. “Shucks to that” I say, as in my opinion dead blogs with contents changing once every couple of months are not productive. I subscribe to the idea of Boing Boing - a few different people doing articles results in a blog that is up to date, and not stale. I’ve been hearing about this wonderful collaborations, and comments from other bloggers, etc but so far that pretty much haven’t happened. As a result, I treat this site as a personal brain dump back-up. I don’t want to keep trivia in my memory, instead I want to be able to go and see what I did a year or two ago, and how to reproduce the results, so I am not starting from zero next time I touch the same thing. Of course this is just my opinion, but here it counts.

So far dAVE tolerated me, although I am not so sure once he discovers this page.
